O Tannenbaum...

You knew I'd weigh in on the whole christmas tree debate, didn't you.

I know you expect me to say that christians should boycott places that won't call it a 'Christmas' tree, seeing how I'm a committed Christian who tries to live that way 7 days a week.

BUT. I'm not going to be boycotting stores who aren't a friend to the 'Christmas tree' this year.

Why? It's simple: I'm against any form of holiday tree in the first place. I'm actually against exchanging gifts on the 25th of December, too.

Now, before you go calling me a scrooge or something, listen to my reasons. If you do that, then I'll gladly submit to being called 'Ebeneezer.'

As you may have heard, Christmas is a Christian celebration of the blessed birth of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Nowhere in the Holy Scriptures do I see any mention of a tree. (Except the one that Zacheus the tax collector scrambled up, and the other one that Judas Iscariot, who turned Jesus in to the people that eventually killed Him, hung himself on, of course, but I somehow fail to believe that either arbor was bedecked in tinsel and miniature lights.)

Furthermore, I don't see how an over-priced and dressed-up tree can contribute anything to my spiritual life. If nothing else, I think that it contributes to materialism and greed. Don't believe me? Then consider the fact that there isn't a family alive that puts up a Christmas tree and leaves empty the space beneath it.

No, a "Christmas" tree (and I'm using quotes because I don't think it deserves that name) is an expression of a holiday that has nothing to do with Jesus. And, being a Christian, I can't condone the use of such foliage. (This isn't a trick to get out of buying my sisters presents, by the way.)

If ever I'm blessed enough to have a family of my own, you can bet all of the presents under this year's "holiday tree" that I won't allow this tribute to greed through my front door!

"Season's Greetings,"

sally b.
