Sadly, religious intolerance, open discrimination is so deeply imbedded in Egyptian society; No one dares to change the statuesque, hate, misery and widespread ignorance resulted in systematic persecution in all aspects of day-to-day living for Egypt’s Christian minority. In Nazi Germany-simply having a Jewish sounding Surname- meant the difference between life and death…..
Growing up in Egypt in 80’s, I was subjected to the ugliness and indifference at an early age! With a name like George Edward Saleeb Shinuda, I was bound to be disenfranchised from the day I was born because of my name. I found myself asking why me; then later I discovered why all the kids in the building were we lived we’re not allowed to drink or eat at our house as if we had a disease. New Fiends in school would last so long before the mandatory Quran class starts and a teacher announces the name of any non Muslim students and asks them to strand up and wait on the other side of the classroom until the class is dismissed.
